CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME

Patients suffering from Chronic fatigue syndrome experience several months or more of extreme fatigue without an apparent underlying medical condition. Experts also call this condition myalgic encephalomyelitis, or systemic exertional intolerance disease (SEID).

What are the symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome?

  • Restless sleep
  • Sleep that is not refreshing
  • Difficulty focusing, concentrating, or remembering
  • An onset of dizziness standing up from a bed
  • Sore throat
  • Headaches
  • Enlarged lymph nodes in your neck or armpits
  • Unexplained muscle or joint pain

What are the causes of chronic fatigue syndrome?

Though scientists do not know the root cause of chronic fatigue syndrome, there are several theories, including viral infections and psychological stress.

The cause of chronic fatigue syndrome is unknown, although there are many theories — ranging from viral infections to psychological stress. Some experts believe chronic fatigue syndrome might be triggered by a combination of factors.

No single test exists to confirm if a patient has a diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome. Patients usually require a series of medical tests to rule out an array of health problems that present similar symptoms. Treatment for chronic fatigue syndrome focuses mostly on improving symptoms.

How is chronic fatigue syndrome diagnosed?

Chronic fatigue syndrome cannot be diagnosed with a single test. Symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome also mimic those of other health problems, including:

  • Sleep disorders: Sleep disorders can cause chronic fatigue syndrome. Sleep studies can determine if your rest is being disturbed by disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, parasomnia, or insomnia.
  • Medical problems: Anemia, diabetes, and underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) can cause fatigue. Lab tests can check your blood for evidence of these medical conditions.
  • Mental health issues: Mental health problems, such as depression and anxiety can cause fatigue. A psychiatrist can help diagnose these conditions and determine if they are causing fatigue.

People with chronic fatigue syndrome often have other health problems at the same time, such as sleep disorders, irritable bowel syndrome, fibromyalgia, depression, or anxiety.

Chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia share so many symptoms that some researchers consider the two disorders to be different aspects of the same disease.
