When are some treatments for hip pain?

At-home treatment

If you have minor hip pain, some at-home treatments can help:

  • Rest: Avoid repeated bending at the hip and direct pressure on the hip. Try not to sleep on the affected side and avoid prolonged sitting.
  • Pain relievers: Over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen (Tylenol, others), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others), and naproxen sodium (Aleve) may help ease your hip pain.
  • Ice or heat: Rotate between ice and heat on the injured area. Apply an ice pack for 20 minutes to help reduce inflammation and 20 minutes of heat to help prepare your muscles for any movement, stretching, etc. Repeat this several times daily.

If self-care treatments don’t help, make an appointment with your doctor.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapists diagnose and treat patients with medical problems or injuries that limit their ability to take part in their daily lives. Patients will usually see a physical therapist after a referral by their primary physician. Physical therapists work with patients who have experienced an injury or disease that has affected their movement and range of motion.
