Ultrasound Therapy

Therapeutic ultrasound helps in the management of musculoskeletal disorders. The noninvasive therapeutic ultrasound is often used for patients with knee, shoulder, and hip pain. This treatment also helps improve circulation and promotes tissue healing. Ultrasound therapy uses sound waves generated by a transducer head to penetrate soft tissues.

Who is not a good candidate for ultrasound therapy?

People with the following conditions should not consider ultrasound therapy:

  • Infections, burns, or wounds in the treatment area
  • Cancer (especially near the treatment area)
  • Fractures near the treatment area
  • Pregnancy
  • Implanted devices, for example: pacemakers, spinal cord stimulators, or deep brain stimulation devices

Who performs a therapeutic ultrasound?

A physical therapist, physical therapist assistant, or occupational therapist will usually perform this procedure.

How is ultrasound therapy performed?

During ultrasound therapy, your provider will work on the problem area of your body. Treatments are quick, lasting for five to 10 minutes, varying on your needs. A gel helps distribute the sound wave energy. Your provider applies the gel to your skin or the transducer. The gel also helps the transducer from getting too hot for your skin.

The transducer head moves over and around the selected area and the soundwaves penetrate the soft tissues.

Is there any recovery time for ultrasound therapy?

Ultrasound therapy requires no recovery time.
